Brandings bring everyone together, for both hard work but also plenty of fun.
I had the privilege of snapping some shots out in Hat Creek over the May Long weekend and I can easily say I had a blast! If you're not part of the ranching sector, you're likely interested in why ranchers brand their cattle. Branding is one form of identification that ranchers use to help determine which cattle belong to which ranch. Today ranchers use brands, ear tags and tattoos to help identify their cattle. Brandings happen once a year and calves are not only branded but become castrated and receive their appropriate spring time vaccines to help keep them healthy. I would encourage anyone who has questions about agricultural practices, such as branding, to reach out to a local farmer or rancher. People in the agricultural industry are always happy to show and explain the cool and interesting activities that happen on their farms and ranches. Don't know a local farmer or rancher? I can guarantee a quick post to social media asking your friends if they know one, will yield you many great resources. And if that doesn't work, I'm always happy to connect, as it's always best to get the fact straight from the (horses) mouth!

Calving is in full swing here in BC, and to be honest this is probably (one of) my favourite seasons in the beef industry. How can you not enjoy seeing cute little calves frolicking in the sunshine, even if it's been -20C or worse for most of Febuary.
I had the pleasure of capturing images at Bar 5 Ranch in Pritchard, BC on a particularly sunny Febuary day. Thank you again to Cole & Nicole for having me out for another year of calving pictures! Are you a BC producer looking for images of your calving season? Branding or round up? Give me at shout here! It's getting to be that time of year again - branding timing!
